WELCOME TO YELLOW PINE, IDAHO
The village of Yellow Pine is high in the Idaho mountains (alt. 4,765 ft), 150 miles north of Boise, surrounded by national forests and is known as the "Gateway to the Central Idaho Wilderness Area." You'll see dirt streets, an original one-room school, trailer park, rustic cabins, country store, hotel, gas pumps, cafe/bar and Recreation Hall. The pioneer cemetary is in the forest near the Yellow Pine campground, about 1/4 mile from town. The Golden Gate campground is about one mile from town. COME PREPARED TO CAMP OUT, USE TRAILERS OR MOTORHOMES AND PROVIDE SOME OF YOUR OWN MEALS.
JAM SESSIONS & "CROWD PLEASER" CONTEST
Free jam sessions are held at the outdoor stage in the center of town Friday & Saturday at 7:00pm. All entertainers, from cowboy poets to musical groups, should register (free) at the stage at 6:30pm. The audience selects the winner of the "Crowd Pleaser" contest by buying tickets they use as votes.
SERVICES & ACCOMODATIONS
Johnson Creek Backcountry Airstrip is five miles from Yellow Pine. Private pilots camp free and transportation is available. Other campers are encouraged to camp (free) in the area behind the school so you can walk to all events. Our small cafe/bar cannot serve everyone. Friday and Saturday dinners and a Sunday breakfast are available for everyone. We have gas, groceries, RV spaces, propane, limited auto repairs, and some lodging. Rooms must be reserved. Store and RV spaces - (208) 633-3300; Hotel - (208) 633-3377; Rustic cabins - (208) 634-5527; INFORMATION - (208) 633-4635. Email: imel@ruralnetwork.net
DIRECTIONS / TRAVEL ADVICE
BOISE TO YELLOW PINE IS 4 HOURS. All routes involve travel on dirt roads. Travel Highway 55 to Cascade. Fill your gas tank in Cascade or McCall and prepare for another two hours of travel. Just north of Cascade turn east at the yellow Harmonica Contest sign.
(1) South Fork Road - paved, scenic route along the South Fork of the Salmon River. The best route for motorhomes, but it is narrow and winding. Turn left shortly after passing the tourist information sign near Warm Lake. Travel 32 miles, turn right onto the 17 miles of dirt road to Yellow Pine.
(2) Johnson Creek/Landmark route - follow above directions, pass the South Fork turn off, go up the steep and winding road to Warm Lake summit. About two miles past the summit turn left onto the 25 miles of dirt road that follows Johnson Creek.
(3) Lick Creek Road - a 50 mile dirt road: McCall to Yellow Pine is 2 hours. Ask in McCall for directions to the golf course, go past the golf course to the Lick Creek Road sign. This is rough and is not advised for trailers, motorhomes or small cars, but it is incredibly beautiful.
All routes have campgrounds for overnight stays.
