SUSAN ROSENBERG
BIOGRAPHY
| With a repertoire that ranges from Bach
to Villa-Lobos and encompasses both popular music and the blues, the American
harmonica virtuoso, Susan Rosenberg, has appeared in recital and as a soloist with
orchestra, chamber and jazz ensembles throughout the United States, Europe and
South America.
A precocious child, she taught herself the instrument and began public performances at age seven. Rosenberg knew she wanted to play professionally, but since there was no conservatory or university offering a harmonica major, she earned her bachelor's degree at Emerson College while she continued to perform throughout the Boston jazz club scene. The classical possibilities of the harmonica's expressive voice inspired Rosenberg to go to New York. There she began her formal training with RCA recording artist Robert Bonfiglio and Cham-Ber Huang, the classical virtuoso and harmonica innovator, and received private coaching from Charles Leighton, legendary jazz recording artist. After only one year of study, Rosenberg qualified to compete at the International Harmonica Competition, where she was recognized as one of the top ten chromatic harmonica players in the world. She was the first classical harmonica player to solo with orchestra at The Juilliard School. A tango Rosenberg composed while studying at The Juilliard School gained her entrance into the BMI Jazz Composer's Workshop where she studied with Grammy-nominated composer/maestros Manny Albam and Jim McNeely. She made her television debut accompanied by Harry Connick, Jr on the Donahue Show and has been the featured guest on numerous television and radio programs. She enjoys regular guest status with the legendary Les Paul and The Les Paul Trio in NYC. |
